Traditions.

My grandmother moved to the United States following WWII bringing with her some amazing traditions from her native England. She was a master gardener, producing an amazing rose garden. She could tell you about each rose bush and I remember her explaining to me, when I was far too young to understand, all about pruning, planting and caring for them. Her garden produced these great blooms and I remember that often she would cut them just at the base of the rose and float them in beautiful cut-glass bowls or dishes that matched her teas set. Simple and lovely.

Today the tradition is alive. We are seeing "floating flowers" more and more used in centerpieces for weddings and special events. Even flowers fully submerged in water are popular. Check out these great arrangements. A new twist on an old tradition. I think my grandmother would approve!

Happy Birthday June!

If you have a June birthday your birth flower is....the ROSE! Worried that you are not very original? Think again. Roses come in some amazing varieties and colors.

They also each have their own meaning based on their color. Here's a few of the most popular.

Red - There is no better way to say "I love you" than with a classic red rose, the traditional symbol of beauty and romance. Red roses are synonymous with particularly deep feelings of affection and have also come to represent courage, sincerity, passion and respect.

Pink - Available in a range of shades from hot pink to a subtle, pale pink hue, the pink rose is one of the rose's most versatile varieties. As compared to their red counterparts, pink roses often convey feelings of love in a gentler fashion or express appreciation or sympathy. Pink roses are also a symbol of grace and elegance.

White - Create an atmosphere of purity and spirituality with a white rose. With their aura of innocence and honor, white roses have become popular wedding roses and are often used to symbolize new beginnings or as a tribute to a departed loved one.
Yellow - Their perpetually cheerful appearance helps yellow roses to represent friendship and happiness. In some cultures, however, yellow roses are also symbolic of dying love, jealousy or infidelity. Nevertheless, yellow roses are generally popular because of their positive meanings, and are often used to send messages of goodwill such as "Thank You" or "Welcome Back."

Orange - Cultivated in a variety of shades from vibrant citrus to pastel peach, orange roses reflect enthusiasm and growing passion. Lighter shades of orange roses often represent feelings of a budding romance, while more vivid shades symbolize a deep, passionate desire.

Lavender - Due to their rarity and eye-catching appearance, lavender roses are the rose of choice for those looking to get noticed. A time-honored symbol of enchantment, lavender roses are a perfect way to express feelings of love at first sight, parental love, and a beautiful world of possibilities.

Brown – Brown roses decorate any affair in a surprising, unique way. These roses come in a wide-range of tones and shades, from russet, to café ole and from smoky to iced tea. Brown roses are a beautiful way to show a man that you love him – they are intimate and romantic, while also showing a masculine appeal. In addition, brown roses convey a feeling of warmth and stability and are a great way to thank someone for a job well done.

Hot Pink – Hot pink roses are symbolic of gratitude and appreciation and are a great way to tell someone that they possess a sense of vibrant femininity. They are prefect for telling your significant other that you find her exciting, while simultaneously indicating a sense of appreciation and admiration.
Happy Birthday June!

Time to Garden!

I'm working on growing a green thumb. I'm not good at plants...can you believe they let me work at a flower shop!?!!? So, this summer I'm starting by planting a few containers and maybe next year I'll move on to a full fledged garden. So, I've been doing some research, gathering ideas. Check out what I found...not really your average garden, but fun!

Remember...

We are amazingly blessed to live in a country that is free. Despite our differences we have a place that was paid for by brave lives. Take time this Monday to remember those who gave their lives (and those who continue to give) for the cause of freedom. We thank you!

History

At Poseyland we pride ourselves in our long-standing McMinnville roots. We have been a part of the Mac community for over 60 years! Last week I stepped out the back door and saw this sweet little spring arrangement set against the background of an old Poseyland sign. Call me crazy but I could help but snap a pic of this scene. I love the contrast of the the new against the old, the fresh on the faded. What a great reminder of where we have come from and a vision into where we are going. What a fun journey!

The Countdown...

Just 9 days until Easter. Yes, 9!

In my mind Easter means full on spring and we have just been getting glimpses of spring here in McMinnville. But, amid the rain Poseyland is ready for Easter!

When I was little I always begged my mom for one of those pre-made Easter baskets at the grocery store. I never got one. Year after year, my mom made us the most amazing baskets filled will exactly what we loved. And now looking back the novelty of those "grocery store baskets" has worn off. What a great gift Mom gave us, not just candy and gifts but more importantly the attention that she knew what we liked, she knew us and wanted to give us something that was personal.

So this year let's all make a deal to boycott those "grocery store Easter baskets". At Poseyland we have stocked up on some of the sweetest Easter goodies and we would love to make a personalized basket for someone you love! Come in and check out our AMAZING Chocolate from The Candy Basket in Portland. We have great chocolate covered Oreo, solid chocolate bunnies, chocolate coconut birds nests and much more! We also have a great selection of Easter plush, bunnies, duckies and great Easter themed gifts for everyone! Let us help you get creative and give a basket that they'll love!

P.S. Remember Easter baskets are for adults too! We'd love to create a beautiful basket arrangement with some chocolate for your special someone or for your Easter dinner table!

Trends. Here's What's Hot!

Something blue...

I'm loving the wedding trend that "everything old is new again", especially when it comes to aqua Mason jars.  They are everywhere I look, used for treats, favors, candles and FLOWERS! Check out these great shots of simply beautiful ideas for your wedding or special event. I'm loving the organic feel it gives the arrangements!

Speaking of Mason jars, we had a super sweet high school girl come into the shop this week with one.  She was asking a friend to prom and had a really creative idea.  They are both artists so she dipped paintbrushes in various colors of paint, let them dry and had us arrange them in the jar with some greenery.  It was great, a paintbrush bouquet!  Which reminds me, prom time is quickly approaching...what a fun time of year!

Prom flowers, corsages, boutonnières, yeah we do that!  Come see us!

Happy Birthday March...we didn't forget you!

Here's where we tell all you March birthdays out there happy, happy day! Most people know that you have a birthstone but did you know that you have a birth flower too? So, if your birthday is this month your flower is..da, da, da...THE DAFFODIL! Oh how I love this one, and they seem to be blooming all over McMinnville these days! It's one of the first announcements of spring, full of color and such a sweet scent, I love how they seem to multiply yellow wherever they grow. Hope your birthday is a bright as these little blooms!
